What "permissions-aware" actually has to mean.

Most enterprise AI is permissions-naive: the model is trained or grounded against a corpus that was indexed with one user's view, and every downstream answer reflects that. Permissions-aware AI is a different architecture entirely.

Stage What permissions-aware AI requires
Indexing The retrieval index understands per-document, per-user permissions. It does not flatten them.
Retrieval Every query is bounded by the asking user's effective permissions at query time, not at index time.
Generation The answer is composed only from documents the user could have read directly. No synthesis across boundaries.
Audit Every retrieval emits an evidence record — query, user, documents retrieved, documents excluded — anchored to the audit ledger.
